The Cowra Wine Region is situated in the Central Ranges Zone of New South Wales and includes the townships of Cowra, Canowindra, and Billimari.
Currently there are over 40 vineyards dotted around the region. There are also lots of tourism options throughout.
Warm days, cool nights and dry, late summers allow local vignerons to grow superior grape varieties. Their passion for perfection has resulted in many accolades, including “Best Red” in NSW and many other gold medals and trophies in Australia and overseas.
Whilst Shiraz and Chardonnay have been the dominant varieties, the climate indicates that Petit Verdot, Sangiovese, and Tempranillo could start to feature prominently in times ahead.
Four local wines have been named in James Halliday’s top 100 NSW wines. Wine critic Chris Shannahan of The Canberra Times wrote about the region saying “they have the advantage of making realistically priced, soft, easy to drink wines”.
